Why drains block in Cyprus homes
Most blockages build up over time rather than appearing overnight. Hard water leaves limescale inside waste pipes, and grease, soap and hair stick to it and narrow the pipe even further. Other common causes we find around Paphos include:

Before you call
Stop using the blocked fixture and any others that drain into the same pipe, as more water will only add to the backup. Avoid pouring in strong chemical drain cleaners: they rarely clear a solid blockage, they can damage older pipes and seals, and they make the job unsafe for whoever opens the pipe next. If an outside manhole is overflowing, keep children and pets well away from it.

Can I try a chemical drain cleaner first?
We advise against it. Chemical cleaners can soften a light build-up, but they rarely shift a real blockage and often just sit in the pipe. They can damage older pipes, seals and rubber connectors, and they are a hazard when the pipe is opened later. If a plunger does not help, it is better to call us.
Why does my drain keep blocking?
Repeat blockages usually have a cause beyond what was flushed or poured. Limescale lining the pipe, a section laid with too little fall, a cracked pipe or roots in an outside drain will catch waste again and again. That is why we look for the reason behind the blockage rather than only clearing it.
My toilet and shower are both backing up. What does that mean?
When more than one fixture backs up at the same time, the problem is usually further down the line, in the main waste pipe or an outside manhole, rather than in the fixtures themselves. Use as little water in the property as possible and contact us so we can check the main drain.
Do you unblock outside drains and manholes?
Yes. We clear outside gullies, manholes and the underground runs between them, which often collect sand, leaves and debris after heavy winter rain. We also check that grates and covers are in place, so the same material does not simply wash back in with the next storm.
